King Scorpion I

Scorpion I was the first of two kings so-named of Upper Egypt during the Protodynastic Period. His name may refer to the scorpion goddess Serket.

He is believed to have lived in Thinis one or two centuries before the rule of the better known King Scorpion of Nekhen. To him belongs the U-j tomb found in the royal cemetery of Abydos where Thinite kings were buried.

Recently a 5,000-year-old graffiti has been discovered by Professor John Darnell of Yale University that also bears the symbols of Scorpion and depicts his victory over another protodynastic ruler (possibly Naqada's king). The defeated king or place named in the graffiti was Bull's Head, a marking also found in U-j. The image was recorded and shown in a History Channel special.
