Sohag

Located about 72 miles south of Asyut, the City of Sohag is the capital of the Sohag governorate. It is also a major Coptic Christian center for Upper Egypt with 210,000 inhabitants (2005 estimate), on the western bank of the Nile, across from the city of Akhmim. It is the capital of Sohag governorate with 3.8 million inhabitants (2005 estimate) and a territory of 1,547 km².

Sohag is connected with other urban centres by road and rail. Luxor is 200 km southeast and Assyut 105 km north. Sohag Institute is associated with al-Azhar University in Cairo.

  • Red Monastery - Coptic Orthodox monastery named after an Egyptian saint called Pishay.
  • White Monastery - The Monastery of St. Shenouda the Archimandrite.
  • Beit Khallaf - Mastaba tombs dated to Dynasty III.
  • Wannina - Ancient Athribis and the Temple of Repyt.
  • Akhmim - Ancient town of Ipu, remains of Ramesside and Graeco-Roman temples.
  • Qaw el-Kebir - The Graeco-Roman town of Antaeopolis and Predynastic to Roman cemetery site.
  • El-Badari - El-Hammamiya, el-Badari, Mostagedda, Deir Tasa and Matmar.
